Franz Schubert’s (1797–1828) song cycle Winterreise (Winter Journey) was completed by the composer a few months before his death. It is one of the greatest and most enigmatic works in the history of music. The cycle consists of a collection of 24 poems by Wilhelm Müller (1794–1827), depicting a young man rejected by his beloved, who leaves his home and sets out into the snow and darkness.
