Playing with Monsters – When Monsters Come Off the Screen

On September 26 and 27, the Wrocław Opera will host the world premiere of Mateusz Ryczek’s opera Playing with Monsters, with a libretto by Justyna Skoczek. This is theater that trusts its young audience and does not oversimplify the world. The performance is intended for children ages 10 and up, but also for adult audiences—anyone who wants to look at growing up, fears, and the challenges of the modern world from a new perspective.

Instead of a classic fairy tale, the performance offers an experience: dark, beautiful, and surprisingly relatable. The nighttime silence of a child’s room gradually blends with digital darkness, and the line between the world of imagination and reality turns out to be incredibly thin. It is a story of transition—from childhood to adolescence, from myth to technology, from carefree play to responsibility.

Rafał Karczmarczyk serves as music director, and Marta Streker is the director. On the day of the world premiere, September 26, one hour before the 12:00 PM and 7:00 PM performances, the composer himself will give introductory talks about the work.
